Description

I finally left Boothbay Harbor heading downeast and arrived at Port Clyde and the mooring I reserved from the general store on the dock.  (Jul. 26)

It was a short dinghy-row to the dock and store from my mooring. I ended up staying an additional day during my only day of nasty weather that was forecasted to be heading my way. The NOAA forecast was certainly accurate it later turned out. (Jul. 27)

From Port Clyde I moved on to Southern Harbor on North Haven Island, just above Vinal Haven, where I was given a free mooring for the night by Thayer's Boatyard and invited to "enjoy the evening."  (Jul. 28)

The next day I made it to Bass Harbor, Mount Desert Island, where I picked up a mooring from Morris Yachts. This too turned into an extended stay with a persistent rapping sound coming from beneath the boat on the starboard side. Convinced that it was caused by an entangled lobster pot buoy, I awaited a diver to check it out, remove it. Sunset one evening was quite spectacular. (Jul. 30)

I made Northeast Harbor further up on Mount Desert Island from there -- a place I'd planned to spend at least a couple of days. Finding myself unexpectedly ahead of schedule to reach South Addision, I took the time to relax, and prepare for my biggest challenge, about to come up. (Aug. 1)

The next morning arrived with rain and thick fog. I'd arranged to spend two days anyway at the town dock.  (Aug. 2)

The fog got thicker as the morning progressed, and the rain continued until around noon.

After speaking with Monica on the phone and finding myself so far ahead of schedule, I decided to spend another day here.  (Aug 2)

Upon departing Northeast Harbor and passing Mount Desert Island to the south on my voyage downeast in a northwest wind, Chip Ahoy was almost knocked down by powerful gusts blowing through the valleys between the mountains and out the bays. I dropped sail and motored the rest of the way that day. (Aug 3)

Otter Point, the southeast tip of Mount Desert Island heading out into Frenchman's Bay on my way to Winter Harbor. (Aug. 3)
